Revolutionizing Data Center Efficiency

Kenneth G. Brill, Executive Director, Uptime Institute, Inc.

Rapid and continuing growth in the number of servers being installed is driving the biggest global boom in data center construction history. The OpEx and CapEx costs of these new data centers are creating significant financial challenges for many IT intensive enterprises. This session identifies the three primary drivers of ever increasing facility costs and identifies the three strategic actions required by CFOs and CIOs to throttle uneconomic application demand and re-balance IT’s economics. In order to drive implementation of the three strategic actions, a comprehensive metric for measuring combined IT and facility progress toward a goal of doubling IT corporate energy efficiency by 2012 is proposed. Some the provocative recommendations discussed in this presentation include the following:

  • Facility OpEx and CapEx costs in total cost of ownership ROI for all new IT initiatives and significantly changing chargeback systems
  • Appointment of an internal Energy Czar with accountability and authority
  • Transferring financial accountability of data center assets from Corporate Real Estate to the CIO
